Desi Carlos is a trusted Dietitian, committed to the well-being of a diverse patronage. After sixteen years of industry experience, she has risen to the top of her profession. She has developed numerous private practices located on the Southside of Brisbane. Her areas of interest include: weight control in adults and children, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, eating disorders, bowel disorders, women’s health, pregnancy & lactation, and child nutrition. She has the full support of her husband Peter Carlos, seven-year old son Connor and four-year old daughter Zoe.
In 1991, Desi attained a Bachelor of Applied Science at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), majoring in Biochemistry and Microbiology with a sub-major in Nutrition. After completing a Graduate Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics, she commenced a full-time position as a clinical dietitian at the Gold Coast Hospital. Her main areas of specialty there included diabetes, weight control and heart disease.
In 1995, under a Federal Government grant, Desi consulted in the area of diabetes management for patients of the Brisbane Inner South and Southside Central Division of General Practitioners. Over the following five years, systems and procedures were developed for diabetes nutritional care and total care mini-clinic models for both Greek and English speaking patients.
Between 1998 and 2001, her expertise in nutrition led to the development and publication of the ‘E.A.S.E. Weight Loss and Lifestyle Modification Program’, in conjunction with the Brisbane Lifestyle and Health Group. Desi has also co-written and published a scientific paper on ‘Weight Loss with EASE – a primary health approach’ with the American Diabetes Association.
Desi founded ‘Tree of Life Nutrition services’ – a network of dietetic practices throughout the south-side of Brisbane. The Tree of Life Nutrition team incorporates dietitians, exercise physiotherapists, physiotherapists and psychologists. Tree of Life Nutrition also presents seminars to the corporate sector and organizations such as churches, mothers, women's and business groups.
In 2004, Desi established Tree of Life International, which aimed to enhance women through the provision of services in health, finance and spiritual matters based on Christian values. By increasing woman’s knowledge and supplying practical information, it was Desi’s hope that women would become better mothers, better wives and partners. Her overall goal was to assist individual woman to increase their confidence, feel great and establish long-term lifestyle goals, for the whole family, that would assist them to lose weight and be healthy for the rest of their lives.
Desi’s commitment extends to one-on-one consultations, nutritional assessment and recommendations. She can be heard regularly on 97.3 FM Radio, seen on television (Brisbane Extra) and at seminars speaking on a range of topics such as obesity, diabetes and heart disease. As the preferred Dietitian for Beach house Health Clubs and Representative Dietitian for the Queensland Coeliac Society, Desi is making her mark on nutrition in Brisbane.
Desi currently operates her practices under the name of Tree of Life International, signifying the growth and expansion of her services to the community, Australia wide. It also represents the merging of all her ideals, goals, services and values upheld by both Tree of Life International and Nutrition services.
A motivated health professional, Desi’s overall goal is to lead her clients to great physical health. Desi’s passion for good nutrition and lifestyle modification focuses on the whole family. She is active in helping individual members of the family work together to sustain a non-deprivational eating plan for the rest of their lives. Her simple message of “eat well, feel good, look great!” has helped thousands of people rediscover themselves as a result of an increased confidence and self-esteem.
